The Ultimate Northern Ireland Day Trip

The Ultimate Day Trip To Northern Ireland -Mindful Living Company
If you’re visiting Ireland I strongly suggest making a trip to Northern Ireland, property of the United Kingdom. Not only is Northern Ireland home to beautiful, jaw dropping sites but it’s also roughly a 3-hour drive from Dublin with many bucket list stops along the way. With how close Northern Ireland is from Dublin it’s a no brainer to visit!

The Northern Ireland Itinerary Overview

In this itinerary, we will be breaking down how you can see a handful of incredible sites in one day trip from Dublin. Note that this itinerary is timed out based on your transportation being your own rental car. If a rental car is not something you are interested in, there are many private and group tour guides you can take through Northern Ireland.

Here are a few Northern Ireland tour guides I suggest checking out:

Crossing the UK border:

There are so many beautiful sites to see in Northern Ireland and luckily you don’t need to cross border control to see it. Just start on your drive, pass a few tolls and make your way to the northern side of Ireland.

*Toll prices range from roughly 3.50 euro to 4.30 euro each way

Currency in Northern Ireland:

Since Northern Ireland is property of the United Kingdom you will need to use pounds while you visit. Rest assured, every place we stopped at in Northern Ireland took credit cards. I do suggest bringing a few pounds with you just in case.

For a full itinerary on how to spend a week in Ireland including great food, pubs and best sites to see in the country, check out my blog, “How To Explore Ireland in 6 Days.”

With that being said, pack up your rental car for a day of exploring!

Fun Fact

Many of the Game Of Thrones scenes were filmed in Northern Ireland such as King’s Landing, Lordsport Harbour, Dragonstone Cliffs and more!

Northern Ireland Day Trip Itinerary

Head out of Dublin and start your drive to The Peach Maze:

Start your day early in the morning and hit the road. One of your first stops along the way will be at Peace Maze. Peace Maze is roughly an hour and 45 minutes away from Dublin and is Europe’s largest permanent hedge maze. Enjoy a stroll through the maze and see if you can find your way to the bridge above to overlook the maze and the town of Castlewellan.

*The Peace Maze is free to enter.

Stop in Belfast city for lunch:

If you had a light breakfast in the early morning your group may be ready for lunch. For your next stop, drive to Belfast city to stretch your legs, enjoy a plate of fish and chips and if you have time stop into the Titanic Museum!

Visit Dunluce Castle:

It’s time to see a castle! Belfast to Dunluce Castle is an hour long drive and once you get closer to the castle you will start to see the beautiful northern coastline. Dunluce Castle is a beautiful, well preserved castle along the coast of Northern Ireland. Take your time exploring the castle grounds overlooking the ocean and all the history surrounding you.

This castle is directly next to Giants of Causeway so don’t feel rushed while exploring.

See the Giants of Causeway for sunset:

Make your way from Dunluce Castle and drive past the small seaside village of Portballintrae in County Antrim to The Giants of Causeway. The Giants of Causeway is an epic site of hexagon shaped, flat rock structures that date back to a volcanic age almost 60 million years ago. Legend has it that these stones were created by a giant as stepping stones.

Park your rental car at the parking lot at the Visitors Entrance near the start of the Giants of Causeway trail entrance and start making your walk down to the site.

The mountains surrounding the Giants of Causeway are stunning, full of lush green grass and birds soaring above them. The sun setting along the Atlantic coast is unbelievable and such an sight to see. As you walk down you’ll end at the unique stones that make The Giants Of Causeway. Take in the stones, the Atlantic waves crashing amongst the rocks, the sun setting in the distance and the lush mountains cocooning you in this beautiful haven.
